There is no definitive answer to this question, as the best way to date a vintage Les Paul Custom guitar may vary depending on the individual guitar and its unique history. However, there are a few methods that can be used to help narrow down the date of a vintage Les Paul Custom guitar, which include examining the serial number, looking for specific design features, and checking for factory order numbers. With these tools, it is possible to get a general idea of when a particular Les Paul Custom guitar was manufactured.
From 1952 to 1960, the serial numbers of Les Paul guitars were printed on 5 or 6 digit ink stamps. In the case of this style serial number, the last digit indicates the year of manufacture. As an example, the serial number of this Les Paul is 7_6227, which means it was manufactured in 1957.
This page contains Gibson Serial Numbers from 1977. In all models, the eight digit number impressed in the back top of the peghead is YY (1st and 5th digit), which represents year DDD (digits 2-4) = day of the year, 001 = Jan 1st, 365 = Dec 31st, and so A ranking of instruments based on the NNN (digits 6-8) for that day is calculated.
Finding Gibson serial numbers can be a little easier than finding Fender serial numbers. Almost every Gibson serial number is on the back of the headstock at the top. Their placement in a soundhole is usually dictated by the nature of acoustic guitars. In the event of a guitar theft or loss, it is possible to track it down by using this method.
Since 1989, acoustic guitars built at the Bozeman, Montana facility are ranked from 001-499. Electric Guitars built at the Gibson USA plant in Nashville are ranked from 500-999. Prior to 1984, the numbers 001-499 show Kalamazoo production, 500-999 show Nashville production. The serial numbers from the Custom, Art, and Historic division vary depending on the line. The historic reissue guitars feature historically accurate serial numbers.
Stamped on the back of the peghead. The "U.S.A." is below the "Made in", which is below the stamped-on serial number. All stamps in the same size type. Used from 1970 to present:
"A" style serial numbers as used from 1947 to 1961.Left: Oval white label as used from spring 1947 to January 1955.Right: Orange label as used from January 1955 to 1964. The 1964 to 1969 orange labels are identical, except for the added text "union made".
Left: The "inked on" serial number on a 1955 Les Paul standard solidbody guitar. This style serial number was used on all 1953 to 1960 solidbody Gibson guitars.Right: The "inked on" serial number on this 1959 Les Paul Junior has no space between the "9" digit (year) and the rest of the numbers. This happened only in 1955, 1956, 1959 and 1960 when production required a number above "9999", thus occupying the space.
Stamped in serial numbers, used from 1961 to 1969. The 1964 number on the left is still a "pressed in" number, though gibson has inked the impression to make it more readable (they started doing this about 1963 or 1964, when serial numbers went to six digits). The number in the middle is from 1964 (on an ES-335), and the number in the right is from 1961 (on an Les Paul TV Special). Note the lack of "Made in USA", thus denoting these are pre-1970 guitars.
1994 Electric Gibsons. In 1994 only, the Nashville Gibson factory numbered all instruments with a 94xxxxxx style number. The final 6 digits ranked the instruments over the whole year`s production.
1994 Centennial Electric Models.Inked on serial number in a YYYY-MM format. This funky formatting keys the YYYY number to a ranking of the model according to the years of centenial (1894 corresponds to #1, 1994 corresponds to #101, etc). The MM was the month of the model within the series, ranging from 1 to 14 (but only 12 models were actually produced, plus 2 prototypes).
Earlier this year we were ecstatic to receive the first batch of serial-numbered Aged Gibson Les Pauls from Nash Guitars. After providing nearly half of these amazing relic guitars to guitarists around the world, we are pleased to announce the arrival of the very first Aged Gibson SG serial number NGSG-001. This guitar started its life as a 2010 Gibson SG 61 reissue. The same extensive vintage overhaul process is applied to the SG as the LPs.
In 1957 the company was acquired by Gibson.[2] Since then, the brand has been used for a number of different guitars, some manufactured by Gibson itself in its own factories, and some manufactured by other companies such as Matsumoku under contract to Gibson and marketed under the Epiphone brand.

This Moderne bears the rare A serial number, being made in the first run of the Heritage series, which can be credited as Gibson's return to high quality construction of classics - the beginnings of the Custom Shop. 2ff7e9595c
